I was listening to Sean Hannity today. An intelligent and thoughtful
young caller showered Sean with praise for his patriotism and good
works. He claimed he also loved his country and seemed to be hawkish
on the War on Terrorism. He said he was a democrat. Sean queried him
and revealed the only place they firmly disagreed was on economics and
social policy. The usual liberal rhetoric followed: fighting poverty,
social health care, etc. Sean explained his view on economics and
personal liberty but the young man remained unconvinced. I've started to use the following line of conversation with libs and it has been extremely effective, and most have looked deeper into conservatism afterwards. I say, "I agree that helping people is morally right, and we should, we just don't want to do it at the federal level. Most of us conservatives are charitable, we just don't believe the government is very effective with these kinds of programs." If your prospect is an over the top communist this will never do, but if he is a well intentioned idealist, he can usually see the wisdom in this.
If liberals are truly convinced their ideology is superior to conservatism, they would agree to a pure federalist system. I think it would be a convincing display to put both ideologies to the test. Better yet, it would create healthy competition between business and labor. Can you imagine? No federal regulations. States could become as socialist as they wanted to, and fail. Economies would explode in the most conservative states, and personal freedom would be at an unparalleled level. Each state deciding what regulations to put on itself. What labor laws it would have, what FDA type regulations it would have, what FCC type regulations it would have.
I think there is one main argument the left would have with this hypothetical experiment. People who didn't want to be self-responsible would migrate to their socialist states, and people who were hard-working entrepreneurs would move to the conservative states. And they want to steal our money.
